What you may need to renew coverage
To renew, you’ll need to provide info about you and your family. Here’s a list of things you may need to include with your application:
- Your most recent pay stubs with your gross wages, or a letter from your employer on company letterhead with your gross wages
- Proof of any other form of income (self-employment, rental, alimony, etc.)
- Names and birthdates of all members in your house
- Social Security numbers of all members in your house
- Info on other health insurance you may have
These things help confirm the info you provide.
Choose how to renew
You can renew:
By phone
Call Cover Virginia at 1-833-5CALLVA (1-833-522-5582) (TDD: 1-888-221-1590). You can call ${state_medicaid_program_phone_hours}.
By mail
Complete the paper form that comes with your renewal letter. Mail it using the prepaid envelope.
In person
You can also drop off the completed paper form that comes with your renewal letter at your local Department of Social Services (DSS). Just call beforehand to make sure your site is open.

Keep your info up to date
After you renew, make sure that any info we have from you stays current. This allows you to keep the coverage you already have. Your info may include:
- Your address
- Your phone number
- Your job
- Your income
- People living in your household
Report a change in your info
If your info changes, you’ll need to notify Cover Virginia within 10 days of it happening.

Switch to Aetna Better Health®
You can change your health plan at certain times. Changes take from 15 to 45 days. If you live in Virginia, you can join Aetna Better Health of Virginia. To learn more, just visit Cover Virginia. Or call 1-833-5CALLVA (1-833-522-5582) (TDD: 1-888-221-1590).
If you no longer qualify for Medicaid, you may be able to get coverage you can afford from through your employer or from other options, such as the Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace. You can enroll if you’ve had a qualifying life event like losing your coverage.

- Employer health plans: If you’re employed, you can ask your employer if they offer them for their employees. If they do, be sure to also ask for a breakdown of costs, so you can see if you can afford the coverage.
