What is Texas Health Steps?
What is Texas Health Steps?
Members who qualify for Texas Health Steps get free checkups starting when they’re born. Their dental checkups are also covered once they turn 6 months old. These visits are important because doctors can treat symptoms before they get worse. And in some cases, they can help prevent health issues before they start. Qualified members can use these benefits until they turn 20.
Medical checkups
Qualified members can go to any Texas Health Steps provider. If the doctor isn’t part of the Aetna Better Health® network, ask them to send a copy of the checkup results to your primary care physician (PCP). Children 3 years and older should get their checkup every year.
Babies should get regular checkups starting within five days after leaving the hospital, and continue to get them at:
- 2 weeks
- 2 months
- 4 months
- 6 months
- 9 months
- 12 months
- 15 months
- 18 months
- 2 years
- 2 1/2 years
For older children, you’ll want to schedule checkups no later than 60 days after their birthday. If you’re still unsure about how often your child should get a checkup, just ask your PCP.
Dental checkups
Your child should start going to their dental checkups when they turn 6 months old. Make sure they see their dentist every six months. You can call Texas Health Steps or your PCP to help you find a dentist.
Texas Health Steps will send a letter to let you know when your child needs a medical or dental checkup. To learn more about checkups, just call the number on your member ID card.
Vaccines / immunizations
Vaccines / immunizations
We cover vaccines and immunizations for members. You'll want to make sure your child is up to date on their vaccines. Vaccines can help prevent various diseases, such as whooping cough and measles. Your child can get their vaccines during a well-child checkup.
Not sure if your child is up to date on their immunizations? Just ask their PCP. You can also check this child and adolescent immunization schedule for more info.
Rewards for taking care
Did you know that you can get rewards for taking care of your health? You can earn gift cards for completing preventive care, like annual screenings, wellness checkups and more. So it really pays to focus on your health.
