Need a ride?

Nonemergent medical transportation (NEMT) services provide rides to normal health care visits. When can you use this service? It’s for when you have no other way to get to the doctor, dentist, hospital, pharmacy or other places you get approved Medicaid services. These rides don’t include ambulance trips.

  • Commercial airline services.
  • Demand response services: Curb-to-curb rides in private buses, vans or sedans, including wheelchair-accessible vehicles if needed.

When to ask for a ride

Ask for a ride as early as you can, and at least:

  • Two business days before you need it for regular trips
  • Five business days for long-distance trips (more than 90 miles)

Sometimes you may ask for a ride with less notice, like:

  • Pick up after discharge from a hospital
  • Trips to the pharmacy to pick up medication or approved medical supplies
  • Trips for urgent conditions (not emergencies but severe or painful enough to need treatment within 24 hours)

Need to cancel your health care visit? You’ll want to let us know before the approved and scheduled trip.

Ride tips to remember

Get help from an attendant

Do you need someone to go with you? If you do, we’ll cover these ride costs for up to one eligible adult.

Mark your calendar

Remember to mark your calendar for the date and time of your appointment. You'll want to be ready 30 minutes before your driver is due to arrive.

Be aware of travel requirements for children

  • Aged 14 and younger: Must have a parent, guardian or other authorized adult with them

  • Aged 15 to 17: Must have a parent, guardian or other authorized adult with them or have consent from one of these on file to travel alone

  • Parental consent isn’t needed if the health care service is confidential in nature

Prepare ahead for long-distance trips

Do you need to travel more than 90 miles to see an in-network provider? These trips need to be for a medically necessary visit. They also need prior authorization (PA).

Be sure to set up this ride at least five business days before your health care visit. We may reimburse you for meals and lodging costs.

Are you setting up a ride outside the service area with an out-of-network provider? If yes, your doctor will need to get PA for that visit before you set up the ride. Just contact your care manager to learn more.
