Renewing your Medicaid or CHIP coverage
Renewing your Medicaid or CHIP coverage
You’ll need to renew Your Texas Benefits every year, no matter which health plan you have:
- STAR: Medicaid for kids, newborns, pregnant women and some families
- STAR Kids: Medicaid for kids and adults ages 20 or younger who have disabilities
- CHIP: coverage for families that earn too much money to use Medicaid, but can’t afford to buy private health insurance
- CHIP Perinatal: coverage for mothers-to-be
Watch your mail
Look for a notice in the mail at least 60 days before you’ll need to renew. The notice will come from the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC). Be sure to know your renewal date. Your Texas Benefits could end if you don’t renew in time.
Renew your benefits
It’s easy to renew your benefits. You can renew:
Online: Visit Your Texas Benefits and choose “Log In.” Then, choose “Manage Your Account.” Find the case that says “Ready for renewal” and choose “Details.” Then, choose “Renew Benefits.” If you don’t have an account, choose “Create a new account” and answer some basic questions.
By mail: Complete the form that comes with your renewal letter. Mail it using the prepaid envelope.
By fax: Complete the form that comes with your renewal letter and fax it to 1-877-447-2839.

You can also call 211 or 1-877-541-7905 (TTY: 711). You can get help Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 6 PM CT.
If you no longer qualify for Medicaid, you may be able to get coverage you can afford from through your employer or from other options, such as the Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace. You can enroll if you’ve had a qualifying life event like losing your coverage.
Learn about other coverage options:
- Employer health plans: If you’re employed, you can ask your employer if they offer them for their employees. If they do, be sure to also ask for a breakdown of costs, so you can see if you can afford the coverage.
- Visit Healthcare.gov to learn about other coverage options you may be eligible for.
